Profile
Bob Baser is an independent consultant providing international business services in market assessment, strategic alliance creation and project management for companies setting up international joint ventures.

Since 2003 Bob has specialized in international Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) services and has for example performed environmental assessments of fiberglass window manufacturing plants in China, Poland and in Serbia, a brake components factory in Guangdong Province in south China, a solar panel manufacturing plant in Suzhou China, an electronics manufacturing plant in Beijing, a housing project in Nigeria and a data communications network in Trinidad and Tobago.

Bob has been active in the Ottawa environmental scene from the early 90s. An avid commuter cyclist he worked with Citizens for Safe Cycling (CfSC), to develop a Cycling Safety Course program to be offered to Ottawa Board of Education students and citizens generally.

Bob also worked with Ottawa City Councillors to create an Alternative Transportation Program to fund early stage efforts to encourage non-automobile oriented transportation choices. Bob also led an effort to encourage the City to financially assist home owners to have energy efficiency upgrades performed on their properties based on loans attached to the property rather than the individual.

Profile
Oliver Bussler is the Senior Manager responsible for Capital Power Corporation’s environmental and emissions portfolio group. As the Senior Manager, Oliver provides strategic direction to Capital Power’s environmental market activities.
 
Oliver has developed a broad skill in the world of carbon finance, having spent the past nine years involved with Canadian carbon policy, project development and carbon offset acquisitions.   Specifically, Oliver is experienced transacting various offset project types and has been integral in positioning Capital Power as a leader in the emerging North American carbon market.  On the commercial side, Oliver has negotiated numerous letters of intent and emission reduction purchase agreements, such that Capital Power now has more than 10 million tonnes of carbon offsets purchased or under contract.  Oliver also has extensive experience with project verifications, developing project documentation, writing quantification protocols and registering carbon assets.

Oliver holds a Masters of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Saskatchewan and an undergraduate degree from the Royal Military College of Canada.

Profile
Larry Frisch is the instructor/facilitator for Environment and Human Health. An American, he is currently working in Victoria for the Vancouver Island Health Authority as the Executive Medical Director for Quality and Patient Safety. Larry is a paediatrician, family physician, and public health physician/epidemiologist.

Larry has taught pediatrics and public health at the University of Hawaii, the University of Kansas, and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy where he is currently a Research Associate Professor in Community Health Sciences.  He is the principal investigator for the “KSOHIA Collaboration” which provides distance learning children’s environmental health education for pediatricians in Central Europe. Larry has also taught online public health courses in communicable disease epidemiology and health economics.

He is the co-author of a popular textbook on mental health nursing and is currently working on a Quality Improvement text with colleagues at the University of Victoria. He has done research on motor vehicle crashes involving children and on a variety of other topics related to health care quality and safety.  Larry has done clinical work in Alaska and has worked at a children’s hospital in Cambodia.  An avid photographer and birder, Larry also plays bass in a small jazz band and frequents Irish music sessions along with his button accordion.

Dr. Gennady Gienko is the instructor/facilitator for course GEM 402- Geospatial Technologies for Environmental Mapping with GIS. Gennady has been with the program since 2008 and was involved in design and development of the GEM 402. He has been teaching in the online environment for several years in the areas of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. At his previous position with the School of Geography at the University of the South Pacific he was developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, and Fundamentals of Geographic Techniques.

Gennady has extensive international teaching, research and consulting experience in Geospatial Science and technologies. He holds the scientific title of Associate Professor in Photogrammetry from his previous academic positions at the department of Photogrammetry and department of Cartography and Geoinformatics at the Siberian State Geodetic Academy, Novosibirsk, Russia. His background in geomatics and photogrammetry, along with 25+ years of research and teaching, helps him to apply recent tendencies and innovations in Geospatial science and technologies to his teaching and research.  Dr. Gennady Gienko is a member of working group on Cartography and GIS for Sustainable Development, International Cartographic Association.

Research Interests:  Integrated Geospatial Technologies, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Visualization and Computer Cartography.

Michael Govorov is the instructor/facilitator for the core courses GEM 400- Introduction to GIS for Environmental Management, GEM 401- Advanced GIS for Environmental Management and GEM 402 - Geospatial Technologies for Environmental Mapping with GIS. Govorov has been with the program since its advent and was instrumental in the initial development of the pilot project from which the distance education program evolved from. He has been teaching in the online environment for over five years in the areas of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. At his current position with the Advanced Diploma in GIS Applications of Vancouver Island University, he is preparing and presenting courses in GIS and Remote Sensing for postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Michael Govorov has extensive international teaching, research and consulting experience in Geographic Information Systems, Digital Cartography and Remote Sensing. His previous academic position was Senior Lecturer and Director of the GIS Unit at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji Islands where he prepared and presented courses in GIS and Remote Sensing at the Department of Geography. Prior to this, he presented courses in Computer Cartography and GIS at the Department of Surveying and Land Studies, Papua New Guinea under a UNDP program. With the Department of Cartography at the Siberian State Academy of Geodesy, Russia, he was the course coordinator for the Bachelor and Master program in Computer Cartography and GIS. He has a broad understanding of current global tendencies in geo-information science areas and applies these perspective to his teaching and research.

Sharonna's doctoral and postdoctoral research in chemistry dealt with creating new polymers and finding more environmentally friendly ways to synthesize pesticides and drugs without relying on toxic metal catalysts.  She is currently a professor at Ryerson University, where she teaches several chemistry courses.  Her current research interests focus on teaching and learning in higher education.

Andrew Hall has worked in the field of carbon finance for the past four years.  As a core component of his MBA program Andrew specialized in carbon finance culminating in an independent study supervised by Dr Rodney White.  The study focused on the physical and regulatory risks and opportunities from climate change, development of quantitative risk models and application of financial valuation techniques to assess carbon offset projects.

Andrew works for Capital Power Corporation in the Environment and Emissions Portfolio group where he is responsible for originating, developing and transacting carbon offset projects.  Andrew has also worked as a Senior Consultant at a leading US carbon advisory firm and independently completed a major carbon financial risk analysis project within the energy sector.  Prior to becoming involved in the field Andrew worked for Lloyds Banking Group in Tokyo and London.

Mr. Johnson has over 10 years of experience in the environmental and greenhouse gas sectors. He has held senior roles related to both GHG accounting and reporting and to carbon finance, and is currently helping the province of Ontario implement its Cap and Trade system as part of the Western Climate Initiative. Mr. Johnson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Environment from McGill University, and is Qualified as an ISO 14964 GHG Auditor by Environment Canada.

Dr. David Sider is a facilitator/instructor in the Environment and Health certificate program and teaches ENH 404: Global Environmental Change and Human Health. He is also a lecturer/course director at the University of Toronto and York University. Dr.

Dr. Sider has a B.Sc. in Geography from the University of Toronto, a M.E.S. in Environmental Studies from York University, and a Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of Toronto.

Dr. Sider carried out his PhD fieldwork in India, focusing on community-based approaches to water supply, sanitation, and solid waste management in low-income urban settlements. Previously, he has worked with environmental organizations in Nicaragua, Malaysia, and Canada. His research interests include global environmental change, environmental issues in developing countries, poverty and environment, social capital, civil society, political ecology, and South Asia. Dr. Sider is a member of the Environmental Studies Association of Canada and the Canadian Association of Geographers.

Profile 

Dr. Kymberley A Snarr is an Environmental Anthropologist, with a specialist in primatology, and employs a biocultural approach to understanding conservation management of large mammal populations.

During the last two decades, Dr. Snarr has been working on the interface between non-human primates, the forests they inhabit, and local peoples. Her work has taken her from mainland China, the Caribbean, and Central America.

During the past eight years, she has been carrying out research in Honduras and Costa Rica where she was examining New World monkey ecology and other large mammal populations, hunter preferences and the interface with members of the local population. She has worked in a large interdisciplinary scientific team working on biodiversity and management of Cusuco National Park, Honduras.

Presently, she sits as a Director of Conservation and Research, with COTERC, an NGO which manages a small protected area of lowland wet forest in Costa Rica (http://www.coterc.org). At Cano Palma Biological Station, she is the Principle Investigator in a Large Mammal Monitoring Program. She has conducted research on immigrant women, their sexual behaviour, and changing sexual practices in Canada.

She has been teaching in the online environment in both Anthropology and Environment for over a decade. Dr. Snarr has been involved in the development and teaching of courses in the distance program at Centre for Environment since its inception.

Dr. Lucy Sportza is the instructor/facilitator for Principles of Renewable Energy (CRE 400) and Human Risk Assessment (ENH 403) and will be instructing these courses for the first time in 2009/2010. She has been teaching in the online environment since 2007 at the University of Guelph. This work includes re-development of online courses, intended for both large and small groups. Lucy has been teaching extensively in the Department of Geography, University of Guelph for the last several years. She has a B.A. from the University of Toronto (Geography - Environment and Resource Studies), and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the School of Planning, University of Waterloo. Her doctoral research focused on planning for urban parks and protected areas, with a focus on Toronto.
 
Lucy's current interests focus on the use of parks and other types of protected areas as part of overall urban sustainability -- making urban areas healthier and more livable. This includes an interest in evolving forms of urban parks, including green roofs, and urban ecotourism. A long standing theme of her work has been integrating the continually evolving scientific knowledge of what we should be doing to protect our biophysical environment with the necessity of making decisions that also take social, economic and other considerations into account.

Profile
Rodney White is a geographer and infrastructure planner, working principally in West Africa and China on rural and urban projects. He recently retired from the University of Toronto, where he served for 10 years as the Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies.

He is co-author (with Sonia Labatt) of Environmental Finance (2002, John Wiley & Sons) and Carbon Finance – the Financial Implications of Climate Change (2007, John Wiley & Sons). A Chinese edition of Carbon Finance was published this year. Earlier books include Mental Maps (1974, with Peter Gould), North, South and the Environmental Crisis (1993, University of Toronto Press), and Building the Ecological City (2002, Woodbridge Press). He recently published Climate Change in Canada (Oxford University Press).

He serves on the Technical Advisory Board of the Carbon Reduction Fund and has been retained as the Academic Advisor for Professional Development Programs at the Centre for Environment of the University of Toronto. In this capacity he supports the development of the Environmental Finance workshop series with colleagues in the Toronto business community. 

Rodney also advises on the content of a series of online certificate programs in various aspects of environmental management, the latest being on Carbon Finance.
